Product Category Taxonomy Reference

Each advertising platform uses its own product categorization system. Google uses a hierarchical taxonomy with numeric IDs. Meta accepts the Google taxonomy or its own fb_product_category values. Amazon uses browse node IDs that map to its product type tree. This reference maps the most common categories across all three platforms.

Taxonomy Overview

Google Product Category

Over 6,000 categories in a hierarchical tree. Categories are identified by numeric ID or full path string. Google auto-categorizes products but manual assignment is more accurate.

Field: google_product_category

Meta / Facebook Categories

Meta accepts Google's taxonomy directly via google_product_category. It also supports its own fb_product_category for more granular classification used in Instagram Shopping and Facebook Shops.

Fields: google_product_category or fb_product_category

Amazon Browse Nodes

Amazon uses browse node IDs -- numeric identifiers that place products in the Amazon catalog hierarchy. Each marketplace (US, UK, DE, etc.) has different node IDs for the same category.

Top 20 Categories: Cross-Platform Mapping

This table maps the 20 most commonly used product categories across Google, Meta, and Amazon (US marketplace). Use this for multi-platform feed generation to ensure consistent categorization.

Category Mapping Best Practices

Use the most specific category available. "Electronics > Computers > Laptops" is better than "Electronics." Specific categories improve ad relevance and reduce competition within the category.

Map once, reuse across platforms. Build a category mapping table in your product database that stores Google category ID, Meta category string, and Amazon browse node for each of your product types. Apply these during feed generation rather than maintaining separate mappings per feed.

Audit auto-categorization quarterly. Google's auto-categorization is correct for common products but misclassifies niche or ambiguous items. Review the google_product_category assigned to your products in Merchant Center diagnostics and override where needed.

Amazon browse nodes vary by marketplace. The browse node ID for "Shoes" in the US marketplace (679255011) differs from the UK marketplace. When selling internationally, use marketplace-specific browse node lookups.
